    Apicomplexa

    Phylum of protists

The Apicomplexa are organisms of a large phylum of mainly parasitic alveolates. Most possess a unique form of organelle structure that comprises a type of non-photosynthetic plastid called an apicoplast—with an apical complex membrane. The organelle's apical shape is an adaptation that the apicomplexan applies in penetrating a host cell. The Apicomplexa are unicellular and spore-forming. Most are obligate endoparasites of animals, except Nephromyces, a symbiont in marine animals, originally classified as a chytrid fungus, and the Chromerida, some of which are photosynthetic partners of corals. Motile structures such as flagella or pseudopods are present only in certain gamete stages. The Apicomplexa are a diverse group that includes organisms such as the coccidia, gregarines, piroplasms, haemogregarines, and plasmodia. Wikipedia

apicomplexan, any protozoan of the (typically) spore-producing phylum Apicomplexa, which is called by some authorities Sporozoa. All apicomplexans are parasitic and lack contractile vacuoles and locomotor processes. Apicomplexans live within the body cavities or the cells of almost every kind of animal, including other apicomplexans. Some genera are pathogenic: Plasmodium causes malaria, and ...

Apicomplexa are obligate intracellular parasites that cause several human and veterinary diseases worldwide. In contrast to most intracellular pathogens these protozoans are believed to invade a rather passive host cell in a process, that is, tightly linked to the ability of the parasites to move by gliding motility. ...

Apicomplexa comprise a large phylum of single-celled, obligate intracellular protozoan organisms that all have a parasitic lifestyle. Among the more than 6000 named and probably more than one million unnamed species 1 are some of great public health and economic relevance, since they cause severe diseases in humans and livestock, affecting ...

Mar 19, 2024The apicomplexa are an extremely large and diverse group (>5000 named species). Seven species infect humans (Box). Plasmodium, as the causative agent of malaria, has the greatest impact on human health.Babesia is a relatively rare zoonotic infection. The other five species are all classified as coccidia. However, recent molecular data indicates that Cryptosporidium is more closely related to ...

The phylum Apicomplexa includes morphologically and ecologically diverse protists, such as the gregarines, cryptosporidia, coccidia, haemosporidia, and piroplasms. The life cycle of majority of Apicomplexa involves sexual and asexual multiplication in the parasitized host and an environmentally resilient cyst forms.

The phylum Apicomplexa is an ancient group of protozoan parasites that consists of an estimated 5000 species [2]. All extant lineages of the Apicomplexa are obligate intracellular parasites, and share apical specializations related to their polarized attachment and entry into host cells [3]. Within the Apicomplexa, there are several major ...
  8. Apicomplexan is a protozoa. As the apicomplexan is the spore-producing phylum, apicomplexan is termed sporozoan. All apicomplexans are parasitic organisms, which are lacking in contractile vacuoles and locomotor processes. Important Apicomplexa characteristics are, it lives within the cells or body cavities of other organisms.

The Apicomplexa are a large group of protists which are parasitic. They have developed some extraordinary adaptations which fit them in their parasitic life. They are all single-celled, they are all parasites of animals, [1] and they all form spores. They have a unique organelle, a plastid called an apicoplast, [2] and an apical complex structure which gets them into a host's cell.
