  1. Sexual dimorphism

Sexual dimorphism is the condition where sexes of the same species exhibit different morphological characteristics, including characteristics not directly involved in reproduction. The condition occurs in most dioecious species, which consist of most animals and some plants. Differences may include secondary sex characteristics, size, weight, color, markings, or behavioral or cognitive traits. Male-male reproductive competition has evolved a diverse array of sexually dimorphic traits. Aggressive utility traits such as "battle" teeth and blunt heads reinforced as battering rams are used as weapons in aggressive interactions between rivals. Passive displays such as ornamental feathering or song-calling have also evolved mainly through sexual selection. These differences may be subtle or exaggerated and may be subjected to sexual selection and natural selection. The opposite of dimorphism is monomorphism, when both biological sexes are phenotypically indistinguishable from each other. Wikipedia

Aug 25, 2023Sexual Dimorphism Definition. Sexual dimorphism refers to the morphological differences (in form or appearance) between males and females of the same species aside from the differences in sexual organs. This means that the males are recognizable from the females of the same species. Hence, sex can be readily identified based on morphological features.

Sexual dimorphism is when the genders of a particular species have different characteristics, not related to their sexual organs. On the other hand, a sexually monomorphic species would look nearly identical, except for their sexual organs. Sexual dimorphism can be expressed in a number of different traits.

Sexual dimorphism is when individuals of different sexes within a species are different from each other. With sexual dimorphism, both sexes have morphological variations. Traits like eye size, fur color, plumage length, and height are examples of differences that result from sexual dimorphism. These differences must extend beyond a difference ...

Sexual dimorphism is extreme in rotifers, with the males (if present) always much smaller than the females. Even more extreme are the sea devils, whose tiny males physically fuse with the females to form a chimaera. Sometimes, one sex has additional features (used in courtship): antlers of deer, breasts of women,..

    2. Processes and patterns of sexual size dimorphism. Sexual size dimorphism is a frequent phenomenon where the size of males and females of the same species differ (see Figure 2), driven by one or more of the mechanisms mentioned above. When these processes occur in closely related species, distinct patterns of among-species size dimorphism can result, one of which is termed 'Rensch's Rule
