Diamond forms under high temperature and pressure conditions that exist only about 100 miles beneath the earth's surface. Diamond's carbon atoms are bonded in essentially the same way in all directions. Another mineral, graphite, also contains only carbon, but its formation process and crystal structure are very different.

Dec 24, 2024A diamond is a mineral composed of pure carbon. It is the hardest naturally occurring substance known; it is also the most popular gemstone. Because of their extreme hardness, diamonds have a number of important industrial applications.

Diamond [a] is a gemstone formed by cutting a raw diamond.Diamonds are one of the best-known and most sought-after gems, and they have been used as decorative items since ancient times. The hardness of diamond and its high dispersion of light—giving the diamond its characteristic "fire"—make it useful for industrial applications and desirable as jewelry.

The value of a diamond is determined by the 4Cs—cut, color, clarity and carat. The most highly valued diamonds are colorless with a precisely fashioned cut and few blemishes. The 4Cs shouldn't be the only considerations for buying a piece of diamond jewelry, though—what's most important is how it makes you feel.

    Diamond

Allotrope of carbon often used as a gemstone and an abrasive

Diamond is a solid form of the element carbon with its atoms arranged in a crystal structure called diamond cubic. Diamond as a form of carbon is tasteless, odourless, strong, brittle solid, colourless in pure form, a poor conductor of electricity, and insoluble in water. Another solid form of carbon known as graphite is the chemically stable form of carbon at room temperature and pressure, but diamond is metastable and converts to it at a negligible rate under those conditions. Diamond has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any natural material, properties that are used in major industrial applications such as cutting and polishing tools. They are also the reason that diamond anvil cells can subject materials to pressures found deep in the Earth. Because the arrangement of atoms in diamond is extremely rigid, few types of impurity can contaminate it. Small numbers of defects or impurities can color a diamond blue, yellow, brown, green, purple, pink, orange, or red. Wikipedia
