  1. Sexual dimorphism

Sexual dimorphism is the condition where sexes of the same species exhibit different morphological characteristics, including characteristics not directly involved in reproduction. The condition occurs in most dioecious species, which consist of most animals and some plants. Differences may include secondary sex characteristics, size, weight, color, markings, or behavioral or cognitive traits. Male-male reproductive competition has evolved a diverse array of sexually dimorphic traits. Aggressive utility traits such as "battle" teeth and blunt heads reinforced as battering rams are used as weapons in aggressive interactions between rivals. Passive displays such as ornamental feathering or song-calling have also evolved mainly through sexual selection. These differences may be subtle or exaggerated and may be subjected to sexual selection and natural selection. The opposite of dimorphism is monomorphism, when both biological sexes are phenotypically indistinguishable from each other. Wikipedia

The differences may be extreme, as in the adaptations for sexual selection seen in the exotic plumes and colours of the male bird-of-paradise (family ...

Aug 25, 2023Sexual Dimorphism Definition. Sexual dimorphism refers to the morphological differences (in form or appearance) between males and females of the same species aside from the differences in sexual organs. This means that the males are recognizable from the females of the same species. Hence, sex can be readily identified based on morphological features.

Sexual dimorphism is when the genders of a particular species have different characteristics, not related to their sexual organs. On the other hand, a sexually monomorphic species would look nearly identical, except for their sexual organs. Sexual dimorphism can be expressed in a number of different traits.

Sexual dimorphism is an idea in biology. It means that the male and the female of a species look different enough to see. The word comes from the Greek: di (two) and morphe (form). It is the most common type of polymorphism. It may be caused by sexual selection, that is, competition between members of the same species for partners to reproduce. [1]

Sexual dimorphism is when individuals of different sexes within a species are different from each other. With sexual dimorphism, both sexes have morphological variations. Traits like eye size, fur color, plumage length, and height are examples of differences that result from sexual dimorphism. These differences must extend beyond a difference ...

Sexual dimorphism is the difference in morphology between male and female members of the same species. Sexual dimorphism includes differences in size, coloration, or body structure between the sexes. For example, the male northern cardinal has a bright red plumage while the female has a duller plumage. Male lions have a mane, female lions do not.

This indicates that sexual size dimorphism should change with changing environments. These hypotheses and studies have led to much understanding of the patterns and processes underlying sexual size dimorphism. 3. Sexual shape dimorphism In addition to sexual size dimorphism, males and females often differ widely in shape [42, 43].
