1. How to set static IP for VirtualBox's VM. Noticed that when you typed ip a, you see the network interface of your IP (begins with 192.168) ... We cannot set the "favorite IP address" to any address. The first 3 part of the address should be the same as the gateway. For example, the gateway is 192.168.1.1, then we can only set favorite IP ...

Also, I really need a static IP address for the VM to configure the Ansible scripts and because part of the process is to generate a self-signed SSL certificate for the VM's IP address. But, if you're using a wired workstation or you don't have a lot of configuration dependent on the VM's IP address, bridged networking might be a good ...

10.0.2.15 is NAT's IP address. Bridged is more common for a static IP address. Bridged puts the VM on the host's LAN. See Virtualbox Networks: In Pictures Once you have the Bridged VM's adapter receiving a DHCP-served IP address from the host's LAN, you can set the static IP address on the adapter inside the VM's OS.

As a follow-on to he previous answer, the Guest OS does have a virtual Network Interface Card (NIC). This "guest NIC" has a MAC address which differs from that of the host OS. An alternative would, if you have access to the router settings, to let the router allocate the the same IP address to that MAC address every time it requests one via DHCP.

I am using VirtualBox 5.2.18 on Ubuntu Server 18.04. I have several VirtualBox guests machines sharing a NAT Network intnet.Currently, intnet has a DHCP server (set up by VirtualBox) that automatically assigns dynamic IP's to the guests. This works fine, but I would like the DHCP server to assign static IP's to specific guests based on their network interface's MAC address.

scottgus1 wrote:Internal, by default, does not have a DHCP server.See Virtualbox Networks: In Pictures: Internal Network. So if you did not run the vboxmanage commands to attach a DHCP server to the Internal network, you are free to pick whatever IP addresses you wish, by setting static IP addresses inside the OS's in the VMs.
