Apr 2, 2024I'm a big Curio fan myself. I've used Notetaker 4 and agree that it might be the most similar product to CPN on the market. Here's a previous MPU discussion of Notetaker 4. I'm hoping there'll be a Notetaker 5. I think one thing to keep in mind is that Notetaker 4 is currently $29.99 and many competing products are priced higher.

Aquaminds NoteTaker has deservedly received some good press recently. But as it happens, it has a competitor from the same family tree. Circus Ponies NoteBook is based on the same source code, from a product originally written for NeXTSTEP. It's just been released, and has a competitive upgrade price of only $10 -- a no brainer.

Can NoteTaker 4 import Circus Ponies Notebook (CPN) documents? Not directly. However, NoteTaker 4 can import RTF, OPML, HTML, and (to some extent) NBML files. You must first export or copy your CPN content into files in one of these formats. Then create a new NoteTaker 4 notebook, and use the File->Import… command to import the files.
  4. I used CircusPonies Notebook when it was available and haven't come across anything even remotely close since. The one feature that was spectacular and that I am trying to rediscover in another application were its collapsible outlines--it allowed me to take notes that closely mirrored my thought processes and allowed me to access ideas and expand upon them with surprising clarity.

Circus Ponies is now out of business. iGregor · July 20, 2017 - 10:01 EST #16 And what's up with Aquaminds? Have they gone the same way as Circus Ponies? The Aquaminds website seems defunct and they no longer respond to email. Vicki Brown · December 20, 2019 - 00:29 EST #17 AquaMInds is not out of business.

Considering AquaMinds NoteTaker. They say this about importing from CPN: Not directly. However, NoteTaker 4 can import RTF, OPML, HTML, and (to some extent) NBML files. I looked a little into the shared history of Circus Ponies NoteBook and AquaMinds NoteTaker. There was an application for the NeXT computer by Millennium Software Labs called NoteBook. It shipped in January 1993 with a suggested retail price of $495.95. Here is a screenshot from The Best of NeXT Computers and the stylish packaging

I made this purchase mostly to take advantage of the apparently better writing/outlining software available for Mac - and, of course, Scrivener is at the top of my list. But I'm also looking at a general purpose note taking program. I like what I've seen about Circus Ponies NoteBook, but it seems almost identical to Aquaminds NoteTaker.

If you used or remembered the skeumorphic sibling apps Circus Ponies Notebook and Aquaminds NoteTaker (going back to their shared history as an app for the NeXT Computer and then the earliest Macs), you might be interested to know that NoteTaker 4.0 just appeared in the Mac App Store from its original, longtime developer, Aquaminds. $29.99, Mac-only.

Sep 3, 2023The demise of Circus Ponies Notebook sent me back to using the aging Aquaminds Notetaker (they are promising a new update). ... Sep 1, 2017 at 05:26 PM . ... If it is the "notebook metaphor" that most attracts you to Circus Ponies Notebook/NoteTaker, Curio might be a solution. I mention this now, because Curio is on sale for a short while ...
