    Ludwig Feuerbach

    German philosopher and anthropologist (1804–1872)
    ludwig-feuerbach.de

Ludwig Andreas von Feuerbach was a German anthropologist and philosopher, best known for his book The Essence of Christianity, which provided a critique of Christianity that strongly influenced generations of later thinkers, including Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, Friedrich Engels, Mikhail Bakunin, Richard Wagner, Frederick Douglass, and Friedrich Nietzsche. An associate of Young Hegelian circles, Feuerbach advocated anthropological materialism. Many of his philosophical writings offered a critical analysis of religion. His thought was influential in the development of historical materialism, where he is often recognized as a bridge between Hegel and Marx. Wikipedia

When Feuerbach published his The Essence of Christianity in 1841 it excited a "clamour" in the educated circles of the day, a "clamour" which apparently did not surprise Feuerbach nor cause him to back down from the bold thesis of the work. Rather it caused him "once more, in all calmness" to subject his work "to the severest scrutiny, both historical and philosophical" and in ...

Ludwig Feuerbach (1804-1872) was a German philosopher and secular theologian who studied under G.W.F. Hegel. Feuerbach's theory of God and religion was deeply influenced by Hegel, so it's helpful to begin with a short characterization of Hegel's philosophical project. Hegel had maintained that history progressed through a dialectical process.

    1. Biographical Introduction. Ludwig was the fourth son of the distinguished jurist, Paul Johann Anselm Ritter von Feuerbach. His nephew, the neo-classical painter, Anselm Feuerbach, was the son of Ludwig's older brother, also called Anselm, who was himself a classical archaeologist and aesthetician "in the spirit of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and Johann Joachim Winckelmann". Feuerbach's claim that the task of the modern era was the realization and humanization of God would essentially negate over 2,000 years of philosophy and theology. Although empiricism began this transformation, modern philosophy had taken theological concepts into philosophy (for example, Descartes). Feuerbach had seen the need for another ...

Spencer; Feuerbach's critique of religion gave way to Renan's; Feuerbach's concern with political liberation as a philosophical (and political) act had to bow to Lassalle's "iron law of wages" and to the economic, historical and revolutionary concerns of the Marxian System.l The recent revival of interest in Feuerbach for his own sake comes
