  1. It has been 7 years since pros and cons on Linux systemd have been covered at r/linux and r/sysadmin. This post is about what you have discovered (since then) what that latest and greatest pros and cons have been: Notably by system designers, embedded engineers, and back-end developers. ... systemd-networkd's options are just so good. It's the ...

Sometimes derided by critics as being overly-complicated, systemd is actually really good if you focus on using "the good parts," says James Nugent. Even though there is some dissatisfaction with systemd in the sysadmin community, James Nugent, an engineer at Samsung Research, shows why it largely fulfills its primary purpose. ...
  3. people keep defending systemd with the argument that distros wouldn't adopt it if it wasn't good, devs prefer it so there must be something to it, blablabla. those devs are using powerful modern hardware where the downsides are easier to ignore. using systemd on weaker hardware significantly slows the boot process
  4. Jul 19, 2023What is systemd? systemd is a system and service manager, first introduced in 2010 to replace the traditional System V init system. It was designed to improve boot-up speeds and manage system services more efficiently. Today, systemd is the default init system for many popular Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Fedora, and Red Hat ...
  5. Don't hail Lennart as a god, there's good reason that systemd caused a lot of controversy when it got rolling. It wanted to replace utilities that had been hammered on by the general internet for decades in some cases, and its replacements were not fully tested.
  6. A good answer. Another way of looking at it is a dependency tracker. ... Critiques of systemd include concerns that it's a large and complex set of software, criticisms of the systemd developers attitudes and comparison to other init systems that sought to replace initscripts.

5 reasons sysadmins love systemd; The Fedora Project has a good, practical guide to systemd. It has pretty much everything you need to know to configure, manage, and maintain a Fedora computer using systemd. The Fedora Project also has a good cheat sheet that cross-references the old SystemV commands to comparable systemd ones.

Aug 6, 2024SystemD good: while it is nearly impossible to fix when it breaks, systemd very rarely breaks. it needs almost no maintenance. SystemD has far broader support and most desktop systems should probably use it. I like systemd-less systems for server VMs for the speed and lighter resources, ie Alpine. I am currently tinkering with Void on the side ...

systemd is probably the worse init i have ever used. Everything they say is so great about it can easily be done with commands like grep, sed, awk and perl. ... While this article does a good job of summarising the benefits of systemd, it simply ignores the serious issues it introduces. Had it remained as the initially planned system management ...
  10. systemd is not limited to just managing system level services systemd can also manage user services with systemd user mode. I use this on my Linux system in order to have a couple services running in the background querying for weather or a couple other api calls to put them into my status bar on my tiling window manager (sway).
