    Vienna

Song written and composed by Warren Cann, Chris Cross, Billy Currie and Midge Ure, originally recorded by Ultravox and released in 1981

"Vienna" is a song by British new wave band Ultravox, released on 9 January 1981 by Chrysalis Records as the third single and the title track from their fourth studio album of the same name. The new wave ballad, which features Midge Ure on lead vocals, is regarded as a staple of the synth-pop genre that was popularised in the early 1980s, and remains both the band's signature song and their most commercially successful release. The song was also performed at the 1985 Live Aid concert in Wembley Stadium, and is often performed live by Ure in solo performances. Wikipedia

In 1993 "Vienna" was re-released by Chrysalis, to promote the Midge Ure/Ultravox greatest hits compilation If I Was: The Very Best of Midge Ure & Ultravox. This reissue peaked at number 13 on the UK Singles Chart. [22] Like the compilation album, the single also included songs by Midge Ure (as B-sides).

As commented above, the main meaning of 'Vienna' is that it's about a love affair being recalled. The details relate to the affair, although it just so happens that some of them do chime with that classic post-war film.. We used the word 'impressionistic' to describe the lyrics of 'Vienna', but perhaps Expressionism is a more fruitful artistic comparison.

Vienna Lyrics & Meanings: Vienna / / / We walked in the cold air / Freezing breath on a window pane / Lying and waiting / A man in the dark in a picture frame / So mystic and soulful / A voice reaching out in a piercing cry / It stays with you until / / The feeling has gone only you and I / It means nothing to me / This means nothing to me / Oh, Vienna / / The music is weaving / Haunting notes ...

Conny Plank had suggested that on his over-embellished epic, the band should attempt to evoke the spirit of early 20th century Vienna. Chris Cross explained to Mojo: "Conny spoke about how everything was a big façade; how the music was becoming increasingly pompous to the extent that endings were getting longer than the piece of music itself. But trying to make something over-pompous so that ...

Ultravox's 1981 classic is one of the greatest synthpop songs of all time, and there's never been anything quite like it since. 'Vienna' was a dramatic electronic track that caught the imagination of the public, and became the group's biggest hit.
