Jul 23, 2023The inReach Mini 2 seems to be the most recommended satellite communication device on BPL, but I am a bit surprised the Messenger is not more popular. The lower price and longer battery life of the Messenger are compelling. The navigation features of the Mini 2 are minimal compared to a full function GPS or phone.

A mini-biner to a shoulder strap and then an elastic hair band around InReach and shoulder strap so it doesn't bounce around?. I like Rex's belt&suspenders approach. I often hike in a 100% nylon fishing shirt that has large cargo pockets - some with buttons and some with zippers which are really nice for stowing critical gear (beacon, lighter, small blade) before particular nasty river ...

The Delorme inReach satellite communications devices provide two way SMS texting/email, SOS and manual and automatic position reporting from anywhere on the planet in a compact waterproof package. I rate their cost to feature ratio outstanding. I decided on an inReach through a process of elimination. The only less expensive text/breadcrumb/SOS satellite communications device could only send ...

An inReach delayed messages for hours when a friend was texting me about a mutual friend she had been hiking with and lost - I waited for hours while she found him, drove home, and then called me to tell me they were home. I got the message five hours later that he was found. I have a PLB instead because I would never leave someone freaked out by the phone or computer screen like that.

I was worried about DeLorme inReach SE battery life for an 8-day trip with no resupply. Those worries were justified, but the story was more complicated than that. Short version: I can get about 6 days out of a fully charged inReach SE, with 10-minute tracking, sending or receiving 6 messages per day, running the device about 10 hours per day, without a paired smart phone, and enough power for ...

I personally ordered an inner for my Trailstar two years ago, and was very disappointed by the quality of the product I received after 4 1/2 months. For the record, I was told the order would take 5-6 weeks, plus shipping time to the US. I chalked it up to the risk of doing business over the internet, with something of an unknown entity.

Happy enough with my Alpacka Yak (well, until I tried this), but have been trying out a few more packrafts this summer. Of interest to BPL-ers might be the Anfibio Alpha XC made in China, sold out of Germany. My 92kg puts me too close on the 110kg limit, but just right for the Mrs who is half that.

If snow's expected, I'd take Hilleberg's 10mm pole (about 7.3 oz) instead of the regular pole (9mm and about 6.2 oz). If expecting very heavy wet snow, might take both and double-pole the tent. ... Thats great news. With that mod i think might have found my new tent Darren. Mar 22, 2009 at 3:14 am #1487849.
