  5. Aug 25, 2024Honestly, when people talk about D&D's influence on fantasy fiction they have a bad habit of getting caught up in focusing on D&D's influence on fantasy literature (and often a very narrow slice of fantasy literature at that). But D&D has had a huge influence on the modern fantasy genre, specifically though video games and fiction influenced* by video games.

Sufficiently convincing (or entertaining) roleplay can obviate the need for a roll, particularly if the NPC in question has no strong opinions on a topic, or if what the PC wants them to do can legitimately be seen as in their best interests.
  10. Jun 4, 2024So I'm imagining this reflects what was going on in the late 70's and during some part of the 80's with D&D role-playing. Build a town, fight monsters, loot nearby dungeons, and profit. I suspect that Old-School Essentials Advanced Fantasy would be the tabletop game that models the feel of the early Ultima games, despite all the extra custom ...
  11. Big chunks of Perdido felt like a D&D game to me. Admitedly, the "D&D" would be some very strange mutant homebrew of Planescape ran by a hyper kid throwing in everything and the kitchen sink, but the feeling was still there. I hate 90% of fantasy lit, but I loved the three Bag-Lag novels, and would recomend them highly to anyone.
