  1. History of Bolivia

    Aspect of history

The history of Bolivia involves thousands of years of human habitation. Lake Titicaca had been an important center of culture and development for thousands of years. The Tiwanaku people reached an advanced level of civilization before being conquered by a rapidly expanding Inca Empire in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Inca themselves were shortly afterward conquered by the Spanish led by Francisco Pizarro in the early sixteenth century. The region that now makes up Bolivia fell under the Viceroyalty of Peru. It was specifically known as Upper Peru, and in 1776, Upper Peru was transferred to the newly established Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata with its capital in Buenos Aires. Wikipedia

In 1904 Bolivia officially ceded the coastal territory to Chile under the Treaty of Peace and Friendship. In the most traumatic episode in its history, Bolivia's path to the Pacific Ocean was lost. More than a century later, the perceived injustice of Bolivia's landlocked status remains a prevailing theme in Bolivian nationalist sentiment.

the history of the Republic of Bolivia presents with greatest clarity the process of a nation which step by step has been stripped of its responsible leaders, arriving at today's status which is exclusively the result of the amorphous leveling of the elements of the Indian population, who unfortunately lack an organic and free social contexture.

5 days agoBolivia - Andean, Spanish Colonization, Independence: The new republic was not as viable as its leaders had fervently hoped it would be. Its economic growth was retarded, despite the region's immense mineral wealth and its historical prominence, because the decline in mining during the 18th century had given way to severe depression resulting from the wars of independence.

In conquering the Inca empire, the Conquistadors - even though few in number - move with surprising speed into the Altiplano, the high plateau in the Andes which is often called Upper Peru and which comprises much of modern Bolivia. This is a region with a rich past, as the ruins of Tiwanaku bear witness, but it has been a relatively unimportant part of the Inca realm.
