  1. Neptune's equator seems to rotate once every 18 hours while its polar regions spin once every 12 hours. This difference in rotational speed between the different regions is the largest of any planet and causes the strongest winds in the solar system, as fast as 2100 km/h! Neptune takes 165 years to complete one full orbit around the Sun.
  2. solarsystem.nasa.gov

Dark, cold, and whipped by supersonic winds, ice giant Neptune is the eighth and most distant planet in our solar system. More than 30 times as far from the Sun as Earth, Neptune is the only planet in our solar system not visible to the naked eye. In 2011 Neptune completed its first 165-year orbit since its discovery in 1846.
  3. May 11, 2023Space Science, Solar System and Planets, Neptune. Type. Other Multimedia, Websites. This site has facts, figures, images and links about the planet Neptune. Go to Website. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. NASA explores the unknown in air and space, innovates for the benefit of humanity, and inspires the world through discovery.
  4. science-reference.com

Neptune has an extremely cold upper atmosphere, with temperatures reaching about 55 K(-218 C). However, the Neptunian surface is about 5400 K(5127 C). Neptune is characterized by extremely intense storms, just like the other 3 planets beyond the Asteroid Belt, as winds approach 600 m/s in speed at times.
  5. How we study Neptune. It takes a spacecraft a long time to reach Neptune, and we've only done it once. NASA launched the nuclear-powered Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1977 to fly past every giant planet in the outer solar system, taking advantage of a rare planetary alignment that only happens every 175 years. Voyager 2 passed Neptune in August 1989.
  6. Dec 14, 2024Neptune, third most massive planet of the solar system and the eighth and outermost planet from the Sun.Because of its great distance from Earth, it cannot be seen with the unaided eye. With a small telescope, it appears as a tiny, faint blue-green disk.It is designated by the symbol ♆.. Neptune is named for the Roman god of the sea, who is identified with the Greek deity Poseidon, a son of ...
  7. Neptune was discovered when astronomers realized that something was exerting a gravitational pull on Uranus, and that it was possible that an unknown planet might be responsible. Through mathematical calculations, astronomers determined there was indeed an undiscovered planet out in space—a year before it was actually seen for the first time ...
