    I test this argument through an in-depth analysis of two case studies in the Middle East, Egypt and Jordan. These two cases shed light on different mechanisms and processes within authoritarian regimes and show how a regime's perception of public mobilization and civil society is shaped by that regime's own recent historical experience with authoritarian breakdown or continuity.
