  1. Eleatics

The Eleatics were a group of pre-Socratic philosophers and school of thought in the 5th century BC centered around the ancient Greek colony of Elea, located around 80 miles south-east of Naples in southern Italy, then known as Magna Graecia. The primary philosophers who are associated with the Eleatic doctrines are Parmenides, Zeno of Elea, and Melissus of Samos, although other Italian philosophers such as Xenophanes of Colophon and Empedocles have also sometimes been classified as members of this movement. The Eleatics have traditionally been seen as advocating a strict metaphysical view of monism in response to the materialist monism advocated by their predecessors, the Ionian school. Wikipedia

According to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy: "Ancient tradition holds that Parmenides produced only one written work, which was supposedly entitled On Nature (Coxon Test. 136). This title is suspect, as it had become common even by Sextus' time to attribute this generic title to all Presocratic works (Coxon 269-70; Test. 126).

Parmenides was born in 512 B.C. in Elea in Magna Graecia, which was located in modern-day Southern Italy. He is classified as a pre-Socratic philosopher because he was alive well before Socrates made his impact on Ancient Greek philosophy. Over time, he developed his ideas to the point where he was able to begin his own school of philosophy.

Hellenistic philosophy, in addition to the theme of the critique of the senses, which has given rise to a sceptical reading of Eleaticism, we find attributed to Eleaticism a particularly strict form of monism which (although probably first conceived by Melissus) begins to be retro-projected to Parmenides.
