    Sukkalmah Dynasty

The Sukkalmah Dynasty, also Epartid Dynasty after the founder Eparti/Ebarat, was an early dynasty of West Asia in the ancient region of Elam, to the southeast of Babylonia. It corresponds to the latest part of the Old Elamite period. The Sukkalmah dynasty followed the Shimashki Dynasty. The name of the dynasty comes from the name Sukkalmah meaning "Grand Regent", the title used by Elamite rulers. Numerous cuneiform documents and inscriptions remain from this period, particularly from the area of Susa, making the Sukkalmah period one of the best documented in Elamite history. Wikipedia

The dynasty of the Epartides or the Sukkalmah (ca. 1880-1450 BCE). By "definitely" settling down in Susa, the Elamite royalty seems to have become "semitized" or at least "westernized." The majority of legal or economic tablets, those concerning daily life, are written in Akkadian, while the Elamite language was only used for some ...

The Epartid or sukkalmah dynasty (ca. 1970-1600 B.C.E.). This long period of nearly three centuries still seems one of the most confused in Elamite history, despite the greater abundance and variety of the available documentation. Modern historians (König, 1931; Cameron, p. 229; Hinz, p. 183) have been misled by three factors that have ...

21 The second part of this inscription contains the most ancient mention of an 'Iranian' sukkalmah (of NIM) and shows that this office was then subordinated to the lugal of Anšan/lugal of Šimaški (Steinkeller, "New light on Shimashki," 222; in a Mesopotamian context, the title of Sukkalmah was used since pre-sargonic Girsu, while it ...

This chapter discusses a new period of prosperity under the sukkalmah rulers, characterized by a governmental (and territorial?) re-organization that saw Elam rise in tandem with Assyria, Babylonia, Larsa, and Mari to be one of the main political and military powerbrokers of the time. The expansionistic outlook of the sukkalmahs attested in ...
