  1. Nauruan Civil War

    1878–1888 civil war in Nauru

The Nauruan Civil War was fought from 1878 to 1888, between forces loyal to incumbent King Aweida of Nauru and those seeking to depose him in favour of a rival claimant. The war was preceded by the introduction of firearms to the island and its inhabitants, Nauruans, as a whole. For the majority of the war, the loyalists and the rebels found themselves in a stalemate, with one side controlling the northern and the other the southern part of the island. In 1888, the German Empire intervened by restoring Aweida to the throne and confiscating combatants' firearms; by the time they finished, the German soldiers had confiscated 791 rifles from both belligerents, nearly one gun for every remaining living adult inhabitant of the island. By historical estimates, Nauru had a population of approximately 1,400 in 1848; by the end of war, there were about 900 inhabitants. Wikipedia

WITH ONLY eight square miles of territory, the remote South Pacific island of Nauru has the distinction of being the smallest island nation on the face of the earth. Yet its blink-and-you'll-miss-it size didn't stop inhabitants from waging a bloody ten-year war in the late 19 th Century.
  5. After the war, Nauru was governed by a United Nations trusteeship until 1968, when an independent republic was declared. Phosphate continued to form the backbone of Nauru's economy until 2006 when this resource was depleted. Source: Wikipedia Last Major Update: Dec 2013 Nauru in World War II Interactive Map

The Nauruan Civil War was a war among the twelve indigenous tribes of Nauru between 1878 and 1888. By the end of the war about 500 people had died, around a third of the population. Since the British captain John Fearn discovered Nauru in 1798, it had been avoided as much as possible by many ships, due to its notoriety as a station for pirates. Nevertheless, in the 19th century, the ...
