Flevoland is a truly unique part of the Netherlands. It's also the youngest province. Composed of two connecting islands in the middle of the country, Flevoland only came to be in 1986. And, fun fact, it's the largest non-natural island in the world! During its creation in the 1950s and 1960s, Flevoland's pioneers excellently displayed the engineering capabilities and affinity for water ...

Jan 10, 2025I opt, of course, for the latter. Situated 45m below sea level, Almere is found in Flevoland, the Netherlands newest province, created by some ingenious engineering technology. Technically, it's what I've come to learn the Dutch call a polder, with water from the sea still being pumped out even today.
  4. Flevoland, the youngest of the twelve provinces in the Netherlands, is a testament to Dutch ingenuity and determination. Born out of the desire to create more habitable land, Flevoland was crafted from the waters of the Zuiderzee in the mid-20th century, a feat of engineering that defies the conventions of geography.

Flevoland is the twelfth and newest province of the Netherlands, established in 1986, when the southern and eastern Flevopolders, together with the Noordoostpolder, were merged into one provincial entity. It is in the centre of the country in the former Zuiderzee, which was turned into the freshwater IJsselmeer by the closure of the Afsluitdijk in 1932. Almost all of the land belonging to Flevoland was reclaimed in the 1950s and 1960s while splitting the Markermeer and Bordering lakes from the IJsselmeer. As to dry land, it is the smallest province of the Netherlands at 1,410 km², but not gross land as that includes much of the waters of the fresh water lakes mentioned. The province had a population of about 445,000 as of January 2023 and consists of six municipalities. Its capital is Lelystad and its most populous city is Almere, which forms part of the Randstad and has grown to become the seventh largest city of the country. Wikipedia
