My Fair Lady The musical adaptation of Shaw's Pygmalion nearly didn't see the light of day. Although Shaw's play (1912) was perfect material for a musical, with its rags to riches story and larger than life characters, the five act, wordy playtext daunted a number of prestigious librettist / composer teams until Lerner and Loewe made a ...

Sitting in the audience before the performance of My Fair Lady (as often with the Sheffield Crucible, an audience with a high quota of well known theatre people - Michael Grandage, Cameron Mackintosh and Iain Glen among them), the chatter of the matinee crowd was mixing with the joyous noise of make believe Covent Garden on stage. It wasn't so much a collision of worlds, as two worlds ...

Last year, Sheffield Theatres staged Stephen Sondheim's Company as its Christmas show, a risky choice perhaps - it's probably not many people's idea of a festive pick-me-up - but one that paid off. This year's revival of My Fair Lady is an altogether safer bet, though this isn't just a perfunctory run-through; director Daniel Evans and his cast have lavished a huge amount of care ...

    My Fair Lady

1956 musical based on Shaw's "Pygmalion"

My Fair Lady is a musical with a book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story, based on George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play Pygmalion and on the 1938 film adaptation of the play, concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phonetician, so that she may pass as a lady. Despite his cynical nature and difficulty understanding women, Higgins grows attached to her. The musical's 1956 Broadway production was a notable critical and popular success, winning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It set a record for the longest run of any musical on Broadway up to that time and was followed by a hit London production. Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews starred in both productions. Many revivals have followed, and the 1964 film version won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Wikipedia
