Are smart home devices and voice assistants affected by VPN?  

The DuckDuckGo VPN is only available on Android, macOS, iOS, and Windows devices that are compatible with the DuckDuckGo app. It is not compatible with smart home devices, dedicated voice assistant devices, router VPN configurations, or other similar internet connected devices at this time.

On Android, macOS, and iOS, the VPN automatically excludes local devices on your network so you can still access connected devices like a home printer or smart thermostat while the VPN is connected. We do not yet offer the ability to exclude local traffic on the Windows app, but we hope to do so soon.
